$25k of credit card debt on an $82k salary: where do I start?

Start by calling each card issuer and asking for a lower rate or a hardship plan, then move the payments into one dedicated payoff account. On $82k a year, $25k of card debt is clearable in about three years with a fixed monthly amount.

The question, paraphrased from our study

I make $82k and I have about $25k across credit cards. I keep paying and it doesn’t move. I’m embarrassed to even ask.

In our study, the best plan in this thread got under 70 upvotes, and nobody mentioned how hard the phone call to the bank feels. See the study.

What does the internet usually say?

Why that isn’t enough

This was good advice. It just got few votes, and it skipped the reason most people never make the call: shame. So here’s the plan, plus the words to use.

The plan, in order

  1. Stop adding to it. Take the cards out of your phone wallet and online shops. You don’t have to close them.
  2. Call each issuer. Ask: “I want to pay this off. Do you have a hardship program or a lower interest rate you can offer me?” They hear this every day. Write down what each one offers.
  3. Look at a 0% balance transfer if your credit is still decent. Check the transfer fee (often 3–5%) and when the 0% ends.
  4. If calls don’t work, try a non-profit credit counsellor. In the US, an NFCC member agency can set up a debt management plan that often lowers rates. Avoid companies that charge big upfront fees to “settle” your debt.
  5. Automate one fixed payment. At about $900 a month, $25k at a 20% rate is gone in roughly three years. Lower the rate and it goes faster.
Future Me’s one step for today

Pick the card with the highest rate. Find the number on the back. You don’t have to call today, just put it in your phone as “Call to get my rate down”.

Illustrative numbers: 7%/yr average return, monthly deposits, not a guarantee. This is general information, not financial, legal or tax advice. For your specific situation, a fee-only adviser, a non-profit credit counsellor or a lawyer can help.

Quick answers

Will calling my credit card company hurt my credit?

Asking for a lower rate doesn’t. Joining a hardship program may close or freeze the card, which can affect your score a little, but paying the debt down helps your score far more over time.

Is debt consolidation a good idea?

A lower-rate loan or a 0% transfer can save a lot, but only if you stop using the cards. Watch for fees and for the rate after any promo period.
