I just found out my partner has hidden debt. What now?
Get the full picture first, together: every debt, balance and whose name it’s in. Then check both credit reports, agree a plan, and treat rebuilding trust as part of the plan, not a side issue.
I’m 29 and I just found out my spouse has been hiding over $100k of debt. I don’t know where to start.
What does the internet usually say?
- “Your spouse needs a real job.”
- “One partner should control the money.”
- “Get a weekend job.”
Why that isn’t enough
The thread treated it as a money problem only. Hidden debt is a trust problem first, and the job advice ignored childcare limits the poster had already mentioned.
The plan, in order
- Pause before deciding anything big. Shock is a bad time for decisions.
- Get every debt on one list together. Balance, rate, lender, and whose name it’s in.
- Check both credit reports. In the US, free at annualcreditreport.com. Look for accounts you didn’t know about.
- Know what’s joint and what isn’t. Debts in only one name are often only that person’s responsibility, but rules vary by state and country.
- Make a shared plan with check-ins. A weekly 15-minute money check-in rebuilds trust faster than any single payment.
- Get help for the relationship side too. A couples counsellor or a non-profit credit counsellor, or both.
Write down the three questions you most need answered, so the first conversation is about facts, not fights.

Quick answers
Am I responsible for my spouse’s debt?
Often not for debts only in their name, but it depends on where you live. Community-property states in the US treat some debt differently. Check local rules or ask a lawyer.
